Monster Hunter Wilds: hunter progression from Low to High Rank
Objective
What to craft, when to upgrade, and how to read monster weaknesses so every hunt gets faster.
7 steps · 3 min read
- 1
Low Rank goals: follow the story chapters, upgrade one weapon tree, and craft a full armour set from early monsters for defense. Don't spread materials across many weapons.
- 2
Weakness reading: open the monster entry in your Hunter's Notes after the first hunt — it lists weak elements and breakable parts. Bring the matching element weapon once you can.
- 3
Wounds and Focus Mode: wounds appear on a part after it takes repeated heavy damage. Focus Mode aims your attacks where the camera points and highlights wounds in red; a Focus Strike on a wound deals big damage and staggers. Pick a target part and stick to it.
- 4
Seikret and the Palico: your mount carries a second weapon, so you can swap weapon types (or elements) mid-hunt. Ride it to heal, sharpen and reposition while you travel. For your first hours, learn one main weapon before relying on swaps.
- 5
Defense before damage: when a monster starts carting you, upgrade armour and add resistance to its element rather than chasing more attack.
- 6
High Rank: the jump in damage is real. Re-craft armour for higher defense, and slot decorations for Weakness Exploit, Agitator and Critical Boost once your damage builds take shape.
- 7
Food and items: always eat before a hunt, carry Mega Potions, Lifepowder for groups, and traps plus Tranq Bombs for capture rewards.
