Elden Ring beginner's guide: survive your first 20 hours
Objective
Three forgiving builds, early-game priorities, and the mistakes that cost new players the most runes.

- 1
Your first build should protect you from bad decisions, not maximise damage. Pick something forgiving that scales into the endgame.
- 2
Bleed spear: highest early clear speed, weakest against bosses with bleed resistance. Great for learning enemy patterns because fights end quickly.
- 3
Faith knight: slower but sustainable. Healing incantations close the skill gap in punishing mid-game regions like Caelid.
- 4
Frost mage: safest ranged option and the easiest way to learn boss patterns without dying. Frostbite procs deal percentage damage, which scales into late game.
- 5
Prioritise Vigor first. Most new players die because they level damage stats while their health bar stays one-hit territory.
- 6
Explore Limgrave thoroughly before moving to Stormveil. The early game is designed to teach you the dodge-roll timing that every later boss demands.
- 7
Don't fight the Tree Sentinel at the start. Come back at level 30+ with a decent weapon and a horse.
